Superb Resource for parents, teacher and therapists

From Rattles to Writing is an extremely well-thought out and written resource on the development of fine and visual motor skills. As an Occupational Therapist with over 30 years experience, I see so many children who have not developed the hand skills needed to cope with the demands of writing. Well-meaning parents focus on practicing letters, unaware that their frustrated child may be missing foundational pieces of development that are critical for success.
Barbara's From Rattles to Writing is an easy-to-read guide that starts at the beginning, infancy, demonstrating the importance of laying the foundations for future success early on. More than just a list of ideas and activities for developing hand skills, Ms. Smith places this development in the context of sensory, language, cognitive, visual-perceptual and gross motor development.
The book is divided into age categories (birth thru four years) with a description of what to expect at each age, along with recommendations for promoting development. Included are both commercially available toys, as well as, numerous ideas for making simple toys out of common objects. I was happy to find many of the activities that I have suggested to parents over the years are included in this book.
Numerous black and white photographs throughout the book illustrate toys and hand development. Also included are helpful drawings of grip development and an appendix of expected visual-motor skill development at each age.
While this book would certainly be invaluable to the parent of a child with any type of developmental delay, it would also be a welcome addition to any parent's library. Setting aside a few minutes each day to implement ideas from this book with your child will develop skills to support their future success in school.

An excellent resource for parents, teachers and therapists!

As an occupational therapist who specializes in handwriting assessment and remediation, I find "From Rattles to Writing" to be one of my "go to" resources for parent information, skill development ideas and research information for my writings. Barbara guides you through the developmental stages with pictures; clearly written explanations about the purpose of each activity and easy, inexpensive crafty ideas for facilitating a child's development. Occupational therapy terms can be confusing; but Barbara shares them with the reader with a clear idea of her diverse audience - using layman's terms and pictures to clarify. I enjoy her writing style and encourage new parents to grab hold of this book and run with it! Your child will thank you for it!

a great resource for parents and therapists

As an occupational therapist working with young children and their parents, I find 'From Rattles to Writing' an excellent resource for parents as well as therapists.
Therapists are often left with the 'toy bag' dilemma, should we bring toys into a home, only to take them all away 45 minutes later? The perfect compromise is to offer toys that are easily replicated with minimal cost. This book offers a wide variety of ideas and options to work on developmental skills with items found around the home.
Barbara also offers a very comprehensive look at the developmental progression of skills that are best observed in each child in aggregate, not individually. And, she provides details about the many components needed to for skilled hand use.
Parents of children with delays will definitely find much benefit, but they are not the only readers who will find this book useful. If parents are educated about how their children are learning new skills, they will see new possibilities all around them to enhance the development of skills in their children, not the least of which is one of the most skilled things a person can do with their hands, write.
