A chronicle, not a biography
By Western
As most anyone with an interest in the life of Clark Gable knows, Jean Garceau served as the personal assistant of Carole Lombard, then worked for both Clark and Carole during their short years together before Carole's tragic death, and faithfully remained as Clark Gable's able and devoted personal assistant through most of Mr. G's remaining life and career. Most of her service to the Gable-Lombard's was performed within an office in their own home on the Encino ranch, giving Garceau a far closer intimacy than she was willing to reveal. Her book, Dear Mr. G, was written shortly after Gable's untimely death and after the birth of his son, John Clark Gable. Mrs. Garceau clearly loved, respected and admired her employer and was indeed one of his close circle of friends, but it is obvious from the outset of this book that the author writes as one who doggedly "protected" Mr. Gable's personal life, image and privacy. That being said, you will gain practically no personal insight within the pages of her book. She rarely quotes Mr. Gable directly nor recounts full or in-depth conversations. It is, rather, a simple brief of his years of business, travels, movie deals, favorite foods, personal tastes, close friends and recreations. There is a strong sense that Garceau speaks as the voice of authority on some debated details of Gable's life, (such as, where was Clark the day Carole departed for her ill-fated bond tour trip, which was notoriously reported they had a nasty fight before she left. According to Garceau that is nonsense). If readers of "Dear Mr. G" have also read Warren Harris' book, they will find Garceau's accounts of Gable to be far more generous. Frankly Garceau's close proximity to Gable does make her account far less speculative than Harris'.

Some things that are well known about Gable--as in his long and intermittent relationship with Joan Crawford--are barely hinted at. Joan Crawford's place in Gable's life is scarcely mentioned in passing as the author hints vaguely that Crawford was a "guest" at the ranch. You don't say!
Garceau is careful to not reveal anything that might cast a pall upon Gable in any way, and rather she meant to or not, she reveals her own stoicism at times when Clark really needed her. Garceau is plain-spoken about the unbearable grief Gable suffered in losing Carole, but reveals her own inability to lay aside professionalism for what should appropriately have been utter human compassion. She describes a moment shortly after Carole's death when Clark broke down in front of her. Her first impulse was to leave the room in haste so he can pull his pathetic self together. Rather, she notes that Clark indicated he needed her comfort. It is Garceau herself who appears far more pathetic as she barely offers him more than a stiff, silent touch while he wept! Good God---wouldn't most anyone wrap arms around a true friend and weep with him?!
Garceau describes Clark as having remained sober (not drinking heavily) during the worst of his grieving---and I am inclined to believe her account during that period. She does not mention the effect of alcoholism in his life at later times. She gives some insight into the short-lived marriage between Gable and Lady Sylvia Ashley. It seems Garceau wasn't especially fond of her even if she doesn't come right out and say so. She was far more generous with Kathleen Spreckles-Gable and seemed to have genuinely liked her. Although Gable seemed very fond of his step-children, there is plenty of mention that they were often left with nannies or in placed in boarding schools while mother and step-father cavorted about.

My conclusion is that this book could have been written with great warmth, affectionate recall and insight---if Ms. Garceau had been that sort of person.
