The Wiley “Dummies” books usually have a brief “Foolish Assumptions” section in the preface. One of the assumptions is that you’re serious about studying for the CPA exam, however, I do think this book would also be quite appropriate for those who aren’t quite sure they even want to enter into the field of accounting. A “Dummies” book is the perfect place to explore any field. For example, if you are in high school, what better way to find out a potential career path than checking out this type of book?

If you are truly serious about studying for the exam rather than lightly exploring the topic, I’d recommend considering the Wiley CPAexcel Exam Review 2014 Study Guide July Set . This is a thorough, expansive study guide to the exam. With the CPA Exam for Dummies, you do have a code that will give you one-month access to the online course. The value is debatable because if you have limited time to work with the course, it’s not of much value.

In this book you are introduced to the world of accounting and will learn about the basics such as responsibilities, what a CPA does, types of positions, etc. The value, for someone who is just considering the field and perhaps the exam, are the subsequent chapters which deal with concepts and questions found on the actual exam.

The real value, of course, is access to the online material. Once entered into the trial, you will have access to the real meat and potatoes material, something I would have rather seen in this book (at least in part). There are 4,000 questions / answers, 164 CPA enhanced simulations, and you can track your strengths and weaknesses. Personally, I’d much rather see this in book form. Because of the limited access to the online material the quoted $575 value is skewed, especially if you don’t have time to work through the material. This is one “Dummies” book that I’d take a pass on.

Well structured, simple & clear text & graphics, compact

1118813731 (CPA Exam For Dummies, 1st ed.) is a very well published and competent textbook for beginners. It is not Wiley CPAexcel Exam Review, but also 10 times cheaper, covers all 4 aspects, and contains enough questions to sufficiently check preparation for CPA exam. The content of its only 286 pages of a larger than the standard size for the series is clearly divided into 6 parts, 18 chapters, and under 1000 multiple (4) choice questions/problems. Some questions/problems are preceded by a short description. The question numbers are boldfaced allowing to easier grasp the pages at 1st glance. After the initial reading, it can be used just for warming up.

The front pastedown (endpaper) contains a scratch off access code to more than 4000 additional questions, 164 enhanced simulations, and tracking strengths & weaknesses online free for 1 month on the companion website. Approx. 56 pages of the book are shown by the Amazon.com's "LOOK INSIDE!" function. What cannot be seen is that the book is well printed on decent paper, and the flimsy cover, typical for the series, is prone to creasing.

A promotional piece for Wiley's online study resource aimed at CPA exam candidates.

Just OK. I'm not really sure who this book was targeted at. At first glance I thought it was aimed at people who were not accounting majors who were curious about the CPA, and wanted to know all about it. I fall into that target market since I took the exam way back in 1984 and 1985, and had heard the exam format had changed. I was curious how the exam had changed since I had taken and passed it successfully. But after I got into the book, and was reading it, it quickly became apparent that this book did not really have a target market at all. Instead, it is not much of a book; it's a promotional piece for Wiley's online study resource for those people who already know they want to take the exam. And anyone who is gearing up to take the exam already knows everything (and more) that is covered in this book.

What you get from this book has little to do with the content included between its covers. The intro and Part 1 were a joke. In fact, they were insulting for anyone who has studied accounting in college. Parts 2 through 5 covered each of the four sections of the CPA exam: BEC, FAR, AUD, and REG. They were incredibly superficial, and a waste of time to read actually. The entire book is really housed in the book's appendix entitled: Linking with Wiley CPAexcel. By purchasing this book you get a month's “free” access to the online study resource Wiley offers for CPA exam candidates to use to help prepare to pass the exam. I say “free” because the price you paid for the book is really the price you have paid to get a month access to the online material.

When I prepared for the exam Wiley published a couple of big fat books that resembled phone books at a glance. Gleim has its offering in print format, too. I skipped these publications, and went with the Becker LIVE CPA prep course that lasted 5 months. My hunch about the Wiley online materials is that it is little more than a digital presentation of what used to be in its print editions way back when. Since I did not use the Wiley materials to study by, I really cannot say whether or not they are a good way to go. I can tell you they are one of the cheapest ways to go – so if you already have a sound knowledge of the things you need to know to pass the CPA exam, then you'll save some money to use the Wiley stuff to study by. 3 stars!

Soyinka's a master

I have read four of Soyinka's plays and found his use of language and drama to be exciting and unmatched by any other African playwright. The Brother Jero plays portray the problem of many African societies which have fallen to religion as a way out of their problems, only to be exploited by dubious and unscrupulous 'prophets' who know their weakness. Soyinka artistically avoids the criminalisation of Bro Jeroboam -he dupes even the authorities. The farce is that this silly problem continues unchecked in many places, despite the obvious bad character traits of some so-called prophets. A treat for lovers of subtle comedy.

I’ve always been a big fan of Greg Iles’ work. From Spandau Phoenix to Turning Angel, and his most recent, The Devil’s Punchbowl (just to name a few favorites), he never repeats himself. The central plot of Natchez Burning starts with Mayor Penn Cage, an attorney Iles introduced in 1999’s The Quiet Game, learning that his father, the town’s most beloved physician, is about to be charged with murder. The victim? Dr. Cage’s former nurse, Viola Turner, who came home to Natchez to die after a nearly 40-year absence.

Did his father assist in Viola’s suicide? Penn would believe it: his father did the same for Penn’s own wife when she was dying of cancer, years before. But as the town’s corrupt district attorney pursues the case, it becomes clear that Viola’s death was no gentle passage into that good night. In fact, a crusading local reporter has video evidence that Viola died in pain and fear. Penn refuses to believe his father had anything to do with that.

Iles weaves this multi-generational web like a master, keeping Penn Cage at the center even as we see his father, Dr. Tom Cage, in both past and present, along with the many citizens of Natchez and its sister community in Louisiana, just across the Mississippi River.

Natchez Burning is an epic, a saga, but it’s also a thriller. We feel the panic and terror of young Jimmy Revels as he walks into the Double Eagles’ trap in 1968. And the rage and despair of Lincoln Turner, Viola’s son, who doesn’t know the truth of his own origins. We feel Caitlin Masters’ desperate need to tell the story through the newspaper she publishes. Sustaining all of this tension for almost 800 pages is no small feat. It’s a testament to Greg Iles’s power as a storyteller.

Iles doesn’t tie up all the loose ends. Natchez Burning is just the first installment in what promises to be an extraordinary trilogy built upon the premise that, in some pockets of the South, the Civil War hasn’t ended. “Appomattox hadn’t ended anything,” a character thinks early in the story, in a scene set in 1968. “[It] had merely heralded an intermission. ” As William Faulkner said (and this book’s narrator quotes), “The past is never dead. It’s not even past. ” In Natchez Burning, the sins and unpunished crimes of the generations who fought integration and civil rights are visited upon their children and grandchildren, claiming victims almost half a century later.

A Disappointing Book

I have read a half dozen of Greg Iles' novels. This one disappoints. The elements of the action are so disparate and compartmentalized, that Iles himself seems to lose control of the narrative, with some subplots just fading away, others pointlessly and endlessly revisited. At the end, he wraps up some of the elements of the story with completely implausible scenarios while conveniently leaving others hang unresolved, apparently for further treatment in the next volume. It's all too obvious that this is a writer's project, and the reader is expected to cooperate. In really good literature, the author's interests always give way to the subject. Not here. Also, though I am accustomed to Iles' penchant for edgy material, he goes over the line here, with villains practicing incredible cruelty, graphic sex scenes, morbid details, and such. Should a good writer need this stuff to hold the reader's interest? A last concern: Get ready for some apologetics for Iles' amoralism. Though many of the themes here--death, love, family--raise important issues, the perspectives within which they are addressed are superficial, even banal.

The best mystery novel of the year (so far)

Penn Cage is the mayor of Natchez Mississippi. He is also a former prosecutor and lawyer. His father, Tom Cage, a family physician, is accused of murdering his former nurse, Viola Turner, who worked with him in the 1960’s in the midst of the civil war conflicts. Viola was beautiful and Tom was very much in love with her. Now she has come back to her old town to die. Tom is accused of killing her when it might have been assisted suicide. Nonetheless, the old members of the Double Eagles, a small group of fanatical KKK members run by Brody Royals, the wealthiest man in town, have vowed to kill her if she ever came back. Tom Cage is not saying anything about Viola’a death- not even to defend himself. Was he responsible? At this point, the story takes off in many different directions from Henry Sexton, the reporter who has been trying to discover clues about the Double Eagles for decades and has amassed a vast amount of information on them to the aging members of the Double Eagles as they try to silence one of their own who is dying and willing to tell all to Henry. There are also flashbacks detailing the killings of innocent men by the Double Eagles.
The book is vast- over 800 pages. It is filled with subplots all of which are relevant and great stories in themselves. In a sense, the story is about time and whether it actually changes anything. It is about how tied into our past we are. There is a great deal of suspense and harrowing deaths in this book. It reads so very fast in spite of it’s size. The reader will be totally drawn into these characters. I feel this is the best book I have read in the genre so far this year. Actually, I would have given it an A+ if it weren’t for the very wordy and stock ending of the villain holding the hero captive and telling all. This is the first of a proposed trilogy and, as expected, there are a lot of loose ends. I highly recommend this superb novel.

It was too long and a bit far-fetched

My cousin told me about this author as being from Baton Rouge and having graduated from Ole Miss, she thought I would like this author as she told me she thought he was better than John Grisham. I realize this book is the first in a trilogy and that there would be obvious loose threads that weren't answered but it was way too much. Penn and Caitlin are just too much. As another reviewer stated, at the end I was hoping those two would be picked off in Royal's basement. The story was convoluted, Shad with the NFL player and pit bulls picture (Penn's "ace in the hole" to save his father), Lincoln Turner (is the good doctor his father or was it a Klansman?), what's really behind the "good" Dr. Cage.
I agree that there is also some slamming of Republicans in this book but that's to be expected unfortunately (it's just too bad one can't write a book without all that nonsense because you're going offend at least half of your audience no matter what political side you bash).
I won't be reading the next two in the trilogy. Thanks Mollie for the suggestion but I think I'll stick with Grisham.

Moonfleet (1898) begins as a mystery and an adventure story, a tale of smuggling set among the cliffs, caves, and downs of Dorset. What will be the outcome of the conflict between smugglers and revenue men? How can the hero, John Trenchard, discover the secret of Colonel John Mohune's treasure? As the book progresses these two interwoven themes resolve themselves into a third and richer one, with the friendship and suffering of both John Trenchard and the craggy, taciturn Elzevir Block. The novel is at once a well-paced account of dramatic action and a celebration of the unregainable freedoms of childhood, when, as Falkner's sister wrote in a memoir, 'there are no seasons, everything happens all the year round'. Falkner's feeling for history and for the landscape of his Dorset setting combine with his gift for storytelling to turn Moonfleet into a historical romance of moving intensity.

A Blast from the Past

Number me among the many who read this book in grade school back in the late 60's or 70's and the name stuck with me through the years.

Later as an adult, I returned to this book to read it anew and experience the magic again.

Yes, this is book designed for the younger reader. But as is the case with most well written books, all ages will find something to take away. Treasure Island, Kidnapped etc. are all of the same genre, but what makes Moonfleet unique is the tight identification of the young protagonist John Trenchard and the first person telling which brings the reader into seeing and experiencing it though his eyes.

For a book published in 1898 and set in 1757 and following, that youth in the 60's would find it so fascinating and real is a testament to the talent of Falkner.

Timeless. Engaging. Intriguing. Fantastic!

Moonfleet Should Be Better Known

MOONFLEET is a novel that might have been written by Wilkie Collins and Charles Dickens together, although in fact it was written by John Meade Falkner. I first read it in high school and was very pleased to find it available on Kindle. It is a fast-moving novel narrated by a man looking back at his boyhood and early manhood with the kind of regret Robinson Crusoe had, although in many ways his sufferings were far greater.

I would recommend it for all teenagers who have an interest in reading, and for those whose interest needs to be stimulated.

It's 1757. Fifteen-year old John Trenchard is bored living with his Aunt Jane in the shoreline village of Moonfleet in England - unitl his discovery of a secret thrusts him into a fugitive existence. The relatively dullish opening sets you up for a rivetting adventure, complete with "ghosts," an underground tunnel, smugglers, and the quest for a pirate's jewel treasure. Very atmospheric. Very intriguing.
