A Funny Thing About Parenthood

I was really surprised that I enjoyed this book as much as I did. Mohr makes parenting funnier than it really is. Or maybe just reading about other parents' misadventures is funnier. Whatever the case, it's a well-written, highly entertaining book. I am charmed by how completely taken and devoted he is to his son. He's probably too obsessive at times, but hey, we all screw up as parents at times and since that's his worst quality as a parent, it's really not a liability at all! His takes on kids is a riot and very candid at times. For anyone who has been a parent or is around kids alot, this is a great read. It's no classic, but for just entertaining reading, it's perfect.

Warm and funny

I ordered this book because I was looking for some humor, and it delivered that and more.

The main focus of the book is Mohr's relationship with his son Jackson. His stories of interacting with his little guy are priceless. I know who Jay Mohr is mostly from Jerry Maguire and his calls to the Jim Rome show, and frankly I did not expect to find in this book such a loving and absolutely devoted husband and father in addition to being a heck of a funny guy. Even if you are not familiar with Jay Mohr, if you are a parent, I think you will enjoy this book. Some of the stories were a little less entertaining than others, which kept me from giving it five stars. But overall, it is warm and funny and silly and touching.

My personal favorite chapter was the one on accompanying his wife to the gynecologist. I had tears running down my face from laughing so hard. If you are not one for blunt humor and select four-letter-words, you might want to pass this one up. Otherwise, this is a definite recommend if you are looking for a feel-good story of love and laughs.

I purchased this book because I heard Jay plugging it while guest-hosting the Jim Rome radio show recently. I have always found his humor to great due to has ability to be completely honest in his story telling.

I first read the intro to this book online and was moved to tears when hearing about his experience as a modern day father. I personally could relate to many of these things being the dad to a 3 year old daughter.

I ordered the book a few days later and read it on my new Kindle. The book had me laughing loudly at times relating to Jay's experiences. Jay is willing to share a lot of insight into his personal life. For this, he has a great book here on fatherhood.

I recommend this book to any fathers out there. Especially new and future fathers, since being a new dad can often feel like we are living with an alien creature.

About the Author

Carlo Ghezzi is a professor of computer science at the Politecnico di Milano, where he holds the chair of software engineering. He was named a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery in 2000 for his contributions to software engineering research.

Mehdi Jazayeri is a professor of computer science at the Technische Universität Wien, where he holds the chair of distributed systems. He spent many years in software development at several Silicon Valley companies, including 10 years at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories, Palo Alto, CA.

Dino Mandrioli is a professor of computer science at the Politecnico di Milano, where he holds the chair of theoretical computer science. His research interests are centered on the application of formal methods in the practice of software engineering.

Excellent, but please consider that..

This book is an introduction to software engineering. It's an excellent book because it's a trade off between many things:

being comprehensive
being up to date
giving you the correct background and fundamental principles, on which every new trend is based
being short enough so students don't complain too much .

If you are a student you'll probably like it. If you are a professional that wants to self-learn software engineering, I would suggest instead "software engineering" of Ian Sommerville, ISBN 0137035152, that is constantly updated with the new trends. Ghezzi's book tends to give a more traditional view of the field.
The informations you receive from Ghezzi's book will probably be valid until the next decade; however, it's not a book for "a la mode" guys who like to follow the trends of the moment.

Timeless

I bought my first copy of this text in 1992 and it has been my constant companion and mentor ever since. From my early Pascal days in college to J2EE development in present times, I have always found the authors' treatment of the discipline of software engineering to be concise, accurate and relevant to the issues at hand. It is one of those books that code shovellers hate...an uncompromising publication that addresses serious process issues such as requirements specification, rigour, interface design and modularity, and robustness. These matters just refuse to go away, and the authors of this book know it. This book is timeless.

Somehow outdated materials and concepts.

I bought this item from the marketplace from other sellers (not Amazon). The book I received has a sticker inside that says the book is not for sell, which is kind of weird. Probably the sell just gave me the teacher version. But I don't think there is any difference. Overall, the book content is somehow outdated. The book is printed in around 2002, which is not suitable for today's software engineering courses. I strongly think that this book should be rewritten and updated to include the mobile market. Some of the ideas of engineering still work, but feels like som old-school. If this is not the required text from my software engineering course, I would not pick this up because there are just many newer versions that include a lot of more newer materials. The software engineering field is growing, so I think the text should too.

The play has strong autobiographical elements, featuring characters based on Williams himself, his histrionic mother, and his mentally fragile sister Laura. In writing the play, Williams drew on an earlier short story, as well as a screenplay he had written under the title of The Gentleman Caller. The play premiered in Chicago in 1944. After a shaky start it was championed by Chicago critics Ashton Stevens and Claudia Cassidy, whose enthusiasm helped build audiences so the producers could move the play to Broadway where it won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award in 1945. The Glass Menagerie was Williams's first successful play; he went on to become one of America's most highly regarded playwrights.

The play is well-known-it's the performances here!

I've treasured my Caedmon LPs of this performances for decades. IMHO, this is the finest production of the play ever mounted. Montgomery Clift gives perhaps his best performances as "Tom", Jessica Tandy is wonderful as "Amanda", David Wayne - a steady "B" actor from the 50s, a touching performance of the fabled "Gentleman Caller" - and, finally, Julie Harris is heartbreaking as "Laura". And a side-note, the music was written by Paul Bowles. I'm so happy this performance is on CD. Don't miss it!
