Cuteness to the Extreme !!! A MUST-HAVE BOOK !!! (n_n)

Soon as I saw this book on Amazon I knew I had to have it. My Mom first taught me how to make Pom Poms from yarn when I was a little girl and soon after taught me to crochet. I loved making Pom Poms but never really knew what to do with my bags and bags of yarn pom poms I made. This book was oozing with cuteness by all the adorable pom pom critters you can make simply with a ball of yarn. There were a few things I disliked about this book and that was that it's not very detailed in the instructions. For example the pom pom head of the Blue bird on the cover it so neat and tightly compacted but the book does not explain how to achieve such a neat and compact pom pom.

From my experience you achieve a neat and tight pom pom by trimming as closely to the center as possible without exposing the center where you tied the yarn strands together. But with experimenting and making a pom pom with a whatever goes attitude you'll learn how to make the neat and tight pom pom as in this book. Another tip I can share with you is after you've trimmed up your pom pom to almost perfect appearance ... roll the pom pom in your hands like you would if you were rolling dough into a ball. It helps fluff up the pom pom and help shape it into a round ball.

Overall this book is very cute and even though the book gives you 25 pom pom critters to craft once you've learn the skills in this book the possibilities are endless and you can let your imagination run while and create other pom pom critters and even non critters like pom pom people or even zombies. (n_n) I Love this book and recommend it to anyone looking to try a *NEW* yarn craft or a pom pom lover like myself !! I have already created a few pom pom creations of my own using this book as a guide. Totally worth buying !! And making pom poms are so easy that it's very kid friendly as well. It'd make a great gift to anyone of ALL ages !!

Super Cute Pom/Felting Hybrids

These are some of the most darling little animals I've seen. Chick, bunny, mouse, kitten, bluebird elephant, ladybug...the squee factor is high all the way through to snowy owl and snow people. I like that she is old school on the making of poms- just card board and scissors, no fancy pom maker is needed. Directions are clear and photography is both nicely styled AND clear enough to learn from.

There is one caveat,and its a big one. Most of the critters have needle felted parts. While needle felting supplies are availible at any craft store, they are not a kid friendly craft. I had hoped to teach this to a group of school agers- and I can teach them some of them- but no way am I letting the kids have access to the felting needles. Every on needs to decide for them selves of course, and it could be that I just have an abundance of caution. Completely fresh and adorable, though, and even though the book won't work for my group idea, I'm keeping it.

Pompom Land is the Cutest Land Ever

This book brings back my childhood love and nostalgia for pompoms - that you can easily turn a pieces of yarn into something fuzzy, fluffy and fun - then, into something magically adorable, like the wonderful creatures in this book. The animal projects in this book are CUTE! So cute, it is hard to choose favorites - but, the hedgehog, snowy owl and fox are some of the sweetest soft sculpture animals I have ever seen.

I love it when it feels like an author has updated and modernized a craft. Nothing looks like the googly eyed, barely recognizable pompom animals I remember from childhood. Here you see pompom animals enhanced with needle felted body parts (arms, tails), cut felt parts (ears, beaks), wire armatures, and details like velvet ribbons. The instructions begin with a material list and instructions for making and shaping pompoms. Troubleshooting, material quantities, bases, armatures, attachment and facial styling are also covered in the introduction before you get started. The author suggests using high quality materials - wool - for desirable results.

For each project there are color photographs that show the completed animal from several angles. The step by step instructions are clear and easy to follow, and start with an estimate of how much yarn will be needed for each creature. The materials list for each project includes the tools you will need and also the mm size for eyes. The few templates that are needed are included in the back pages of the book and are full sized.

The value of this book at the current price is unbelievable. Included are a: chick, bunny, mouse, kitten, bluebird, elephant, lop bunny, ladybug, teddy bear, lamb, puppy, swan, seal, piglet, squirrel, raccoon, hedgehog, fox, pony, snowy owl, imp, bat, cat, turkey and snow people.

(Note: Instead of using a cardboard sleeve to make pompoms, I am going to find my unused clover pompom makers.)

The authors provide researchers in the PDS field a sobering look at what was, is, and can be in the PDS research. The challenges for PDS researchers is to consider their critical perspective as an opportunity to strengthen the PDS field by applying research methodology. (Jeanne Tunks, University of North Texas)

After following the work of these authors for years, I am quite pleased it is now published as this book. I applaud their cautious optimism and healthy critique of the rigor in PDS research. Certainly, it has informed my own scholarly efforts in the realm of school-university partnerships. I find this book compelling, honest, and purposeful in its innovative, qualitative approach of a meta-analysis of PDS literature. I hope all readers and critics note the important messages with/in this text in order to provide meaningful opportunities for the clinical preparation of educators across their professional life spans as well as a need for evidence to support the influence of such partnerships in teacher and student development. About the Author
Rick Breault is currently a visiting professor in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction/Literacy at West Virginia University. He received his EdD in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in social foundations of education from Northern Illinois University. Rick was an elementary and middle school teacher before entering higher education and, since then, has worked primarily in teacher education. His research interests include the nature of professional development school writing, aesthetic inquiry into teaching practices, and the sense of place in educational research. Among his recent publications are articles in Curriculum & Teaching Dialogue, Teaching and Teacher Education, Teacher Education Quarterly, and Equity and Excellence in Education. Rick was also a Fulbright Scholar in Hungary and was recently recognized for imaginative teaching practice by the Lincoln Center Institute.
Donna Breault is an associate professor of curriculum studies at West Virginia University. She received her Ph.D. in curriculum and supervision from Georgia State University. Prior to entering higher education, Donna was an elementary and middle school teacher and administrator. Since entering higher education, she has taught courses in curriculum, foundations, research, and leadership, and she has coordinated programs in educational leadership. Donna’s research includes applications of Dewey’s theory of inquiry in curriculum, research, and organizational systems. Her publications include Urban Education: A Handbook for Parents and Educators (co-author, Louise Allen) and articles in Educational Theory, Educational Studies, The International Journal of Leadership in Education, Journal of Thought, Planning and Change, and Scholar-Practitioner Quarterly.

Deep, Dark & Exquisite

This is a wonderful collection of short stories by Holly Black. The stories span everything from faeries to a girl challenging the devil to an eating contest. Holly Black's diversity as an author, and her skill, is exceedingly pleasurable to encounter. One of her characters states: "It was readers that needed to be protected, he thought. Books were something that happened to readers. Readers were the victims of books." If that is truly the case, this is a great book by which to be victimized.

Most of these stories were previously published, but there are two new stories specifically crafted for this collection. These stories have an extremely dark edge and yet a poetic and often amazing sense of what it is to be human, and an assessment of humanity. If readers can be victimized by books, then they will be by this one. It will be an addiction that they cannot put down and one that will leave them wanting another fix.

Terrible editing

I wasn't blown away by any of the stories in this book, and I don't think they'll make me want to search out the author's other works. Some were entertaining and creepy and thought provoking, and fans of Holly Black or urban fantasy in general would probably find something to like.

However, if things like typos, extra words, tense switches, and stories that can't keep their characters' names straight from one paragraph to the next drive you crazy, you might want to give this one a pass. I don't think I've ever seen such bad editing, even in some of the self-published books I've read. It's even less forgivable since this is a compilation of previously published stories. It looks like nobody could be bothered to give the book a basic once-over before it went to press. That's a shame, because it makes me think the publisher doesn't care... and if they don't care enough to do a basic edit to fix the mistakes, why should I care enough to give them my money?

Wonderful Collection!

It has been a while since I read something from Holly Black and now it seems my shelves are brimming. I have White Cat, Red Glove and I just finished Poison Eaters. It is so easy to shift back into Black's unusual quirky writings and I loved Poison Eaters. These stories featured some of my favorite characters from Black's cannon such as Roiben! Other stories I haven't seen before such as Coldtown and The Dog King. I have been in the middle of a huge reading slump for a few weeks but Black's short story collection pulled me back from the abyss. I will quickly go through each of the twelve stories in a few sentences.

--The Coldest Girl in Coldtown:
I loved this story, Coldtown is exactly the kind of place I do not want near and this story puts the scary back in vampire lore. It's not Edward waiting for you on the other side doll, it's a kick ass vamp who will lie to you this way and that for your blood.

--A Reversal of Fortune:
Oh how I wouldn't love to have an eating contest with the devil, however I am almost positive that I wouldn't have the luck or ingenuity of Nikki. Little Boo, I loved you!

--The Boy Who Cried Wolf:
This story reminds me to not take everything I read in books seriously and sometimes a great curiosity is better left alone rather than investigated.

--The Night Market:
Easily one of my favorites in this book, and it is darn hard to pick a favorite. I loved the fae in this story and I loved Black's vivid descriptions of the night market.

--The Dog King:
Take it from me kiddies this is not the one to read right before bed. It is super scary stuff and fantastically filled with lore. By far my most favorite of this collection.

--Virgin:
This one reminded me that Black has a mind that rivals that of Gaiman and King. She bleeds humor with disturbing scenes and pulls you back for more. I love this Unicorn story.

--In Vodka Veritas:
Easily a laugh a minute I loved this one so much. The latin team decides they are sick of being losers and casts a spell on all that would be at prom to have a orgy fest and take pictures to blackmail those affected with later.

--The Coat of Stars:
What would you do if you found out your one true love didn't really die, but had been captured into a faerie circle and has been dancing the past ten years? Why get him back of course! But how?

--Paper Cuts Scissors:
Imagine you had the ability to put yourself in a book, or take characters out and let them mingle with one another. Another of my favorites.

--Going Ironside:
Another of my favorites. There is only one girl and we are thinking her thoughts, all she wants is her little elf baby. How she gets it is what is killing her.

--The Land of Heart's Desire:
Oh Roiben I still love you! You are still the sort of evil boy that would scare the hell out of me and I would want to try to save from himself. Great to see some old friends again.

--The Poison Eaters:
The last in this short story collection and a doozy. A king is remembering a night not long ago when he lost his love.

--Why Teens Will Love It:
The stories are short and fun and easily devoured during homework breaks or study hall. Black's stories are so different from the other it is like finishing twelve books at once!

--Why Adults Will Love It:
Black's work focuses on the teens here in these stories but is easily devoured by adults. The wit and dark humor Holly displays will keep us craving more of her writings for many a moon to come.
