This is a beautiful book sensitively written about a quiet, shy man's experience during World War ll and the effect being sent to Japanese relocation camp had on his life. It is an insightful story sharing this terrible experience with others. I strongly recommend it.

Great for the money

About the Author
Robin Lythgoe was born in Maryland but did most of her growing up in Oregon, with a few trips back and forth between coasts and a short stint in upstate New York. Reading and writing have always been a part of her life, even before she could wield a pen, and she is particularly drawn to fantasy. "In the Mirror" is a short fantasy adventure by author Robin Lythgoe. This Kindle e-book was a 149 Kb download (approx. 10 printed pages) and was free (normally $0.99) at the time of writing this review.



Since a young boy, Ethan has alway been fascinated by the old streaked and clouded upright mirror in his father's den... there's alway been just 'something' about it that drew his attention. Something odd... something different. Now as an older man, he's taken to staring more and more into the depths of the reflections he sees in the glass. Than one day he sees his father... his father who mysteriously disappeared years ago.



Some thoughts on "In the Mirror"...

1.) I've always had a love for fantasies that involve magical mirrors. Just something about the infinite variety of scenarios that might be discovered and written about.

2.) although the main story here is not exactly new, this tale does have an appeal all of its own.

3.) well written with a nice sense of pace and timing for the unfolding of this small tale.

4.) cover art... done in soft muted colors and giving a hint of the story within.

5.) about the only minor concern was the lack of anything truly exciting or dangerous. But that being said, the foundation developed in this work could nicely fit in as a prologue for a full length novel.

Conclusion:
A well written and deftly told prologue-like fantasy tale.

Good short story

This was a nice short story. It was very imaginative. The idea is that as authors both father and son get their ideas and stories from watching the goings on in this magic mirror. There are a couple of twists and turns. I don't want to spoil it for others it is a good read and really quick.

I normally avoid short stories because I like a good long read with details and character development. Most of them read like little more than outlines. This is a good, satisfying story about where authors get some of their inspiration and has a bit of a fantasy twist to it. I really enjoyed it.

waited here too for months for the omnibook in C. it does exist. one thing about it that took away from 5 stars is that it uses some en-harmonics.
for keyboard players reading the Giant Steps changes the "usually notated" B is notated as Cb, F# as Gb.

Great collection, but for the Cb chord at the beginning of Giant Steps, and blowing material notated to accord with it. From a company like Hal Leonard we should expect more than this kind of laziness in transposition from the Bb, which is presumably what their software did here. They don't hire human editors anymore?

Wonderful collection

Really greatly appreciated collection but when I first opened it to see the print quality, it opened to Giant Steps starting with a C-flat chord. (Cb - D - G - Bb7). I don't think I have ever seen a Gb and F# in the same measure for the same note before, much less a Cb in a key signature of C. They should have someone who plays a C instrument review their transposition logic before they print it. The print quality is first class.

About the Author

John Tobey received his BA in mathematics from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois in 1965, his MA in mathematics education from Harvard University in 1966, and his PhD in mathematics education from Boston University in 1980. He has taught in the mathematics department at the United States Military Academy at West Point and served as the Mathematics Department Chairman at North Shore Community College in Danvers, Massachusetts for five years. John has served as the president of the New England Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges. He has received the NISOD award for outstanding teaching from the University of Texas at Austin. John is the author of seven mathematics books published by Pearson Education. John has spoken to many mathematics departments and at many professional meetings throughout the country on the topic of developmental mathematics education and distance learning in mathematics. He lives in Massachusetts.

 

Jeffrey Slater has been a professor at North Shore Community College for thirty-eight years and received the Teacher of the Year award in 2002. Jeff travels around the country speaking on student retention and is also a consultant to the Federal Government. He lives in Marblehead, Massachusetts with his wife Shelley and his yellow lab Gracie.

 

Jamie Blair has directed the Mathematics Learning Center at Orange Coast College for the past seventeen years. She designed, developed, and implemented the Center, and as a result of this effort has provided technical expertise related to the particulars of the Math Center to numerous other two-year colleges and at many conferences. In 2007 Jamie was appointed to the Team of Basic Skills Specialist by the California State Academic Senate. She is also currently participating on Title 3 committees on her campus. She specializes in teaching students who have never been successful in mathematics. She is an expert in the area of basic skills in relation to the learning needs of students. She lives in California.

 

Jennifer Crawford received her BS in mathematics from the University of Minnesota – Duluth in 1995 and her MS in mathematics from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities in 1998. She taught a wide range of courses at North Shore Community College in Danvers, Massachusetts for five years. She currently teaches at Normandale Community College in Bloomington, Minnesota where her focus is working with developmental math students. She lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota with her husband, two young children, and black lab.

Very good book, very detailed.

I would recommend it, it really help me with my pre algebra class. I didn't need to use the access card package, so unless you really need the access code, you can always buy it without it and pay less.

In 2003, he was the first Native North American to deliver Canada's Prestigious Massey Lectures. The Truth About Stories won Canada's highest literary honor, the Trillium Award, in the same year. He is professor of English at the University of Guelph.

Stories can change your life

This book is fantastic! The first chapter alone is a must read for everyone you know, and could change your life. About how the kinds of stories we tell can be paradigm-shifting. Deals with the romanticized notion of native americans (see also Edward Said's book ORIENTALISM), how an invented idea of "indian" has been used and abused by the u.s. in hypocritical ways, and how the stories we hear and tell about ourselves shape our identity. Lots of very sad facts about native american history in its relationship with the US government. The book is set up in a kind of spiral with a recurring story told in different ways at the beginning of each chapter. This book is really for everyone - not just those with an interest in native americans. The stories we are telling in America today are globally destructive and negative - let's start fresh with some positive stories to turn this country around - we are all on this planet together.

The Truth about Stories, a Native Narrative,

By Thomas King. U of Minn. Press

The Truth about Stories by Thomas King is the prestigious Massey Lectures on culture produced on Canada Broadcasting Corporation Radio. King is the writer of many of my favorite works including the very funny Medicine River that was made into a TV movie with Graham Greene.

This book is another honor added to this Cherokee writer's portfolio. I found the book beautifully written and enjoyable as a interweaving of stories both from traditional sources and his personal life.

King has a deft way of making fun of himself that resembles the lead character in Medicine River. At the same time he is as obvious in his manipulation of the reader as that character was in creating the situation that trapped the Graham Greene character into coming home.

The book is laid out in five sections that begins with the story of "The Girl who fell to earth." King then proceeds through the comparison between native literature that stresses the interconnectedness of life and the authoritarian structure as experienced in the "Alpha Male" version of the Biblical Creation. What he doesn't mention is that this also has its parallel in native life in the Alpha character of Wolf society. But that is quibbling.

King takes the listener reader through his life as a non-reservation Indian and as an activist author. He records funny encounters with reporters and journalists who struggle to understand how he could be "Indian." Or even what being Indian entails.

He speaks to the problem of suicide amongst a people who are not afraid of death but can't find a reason for living and ends the book with the problem of his failure with a friend and the issue of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

If there is a problem in the lectures I would say that it doesn't really draw upon our strengths but more on the observations of Indians by outsiders eyes. Indian people had a full rich societal life with all that entailed prior to the plagues that destroyed us. I would like our story tellers to show us how these metaphorical myths opened up the depths of our spirits. How we had a science, art, economics, public health, laws and spirituality. How the stories walk lightly through these structures instead of with the steel tipped boots of the tyrant. Now that is a book about stories that I would enjoy even more than I enjoyed this one. And I enjoyed this one a great deal.

The Power and Meaning of Stories

Oft times we don't realize how important stories are in our lives. Each day is a new story we live, a new story to share with someone. Thomas King (the author) hits the nail on the head through his notion of stories as a means to change ones life.

Each chapter begins and ends the same, with a short ancedote, something King can call his own. What falls inbetween ranges from personal to historical stories, all with pertinence and value.

King portrays the significance of stories and how they can be overlooked and ignored. Stories are one of the foundations of how we live our lives. Each story has the opportunity to shape and/or change ones life. Enjoy King's story and share your own with others.

He is author of The Dilemma of Modernity: Philosophy, Culture, and Anticulture (1989), Civil Society: The Conservative Meaning of Liberal Politics (Blackwell 2002), and The Ends of Philosophy: Foundationalism, Pragmatism, and Postmodernism (Blackwell 2002).

A diverse introduction

Even if one is only marginally interested in postmodernism, this book is nonetheless valuable. It reprints substantial excerpts from writings that put forth numerous important ideas, from Descartes to "The Cartesian Masculinization of Thought." It should not be mistaken for an introduction to modern philosophy, however, because it is strictly Continental and (obviously) postmodern. Still highly recommended.

Quite a thorough investigation into postmodernism

Lots of seminal pieces. My only real complaint is that the font is just so small that it makes reading difficult. I suppose without making it into two tomes, there is no other way to get around the small font. Thankfully, the pages are split into two columns so I didn't get lost between lines. Cahoone has added some helpful commentary.
