Sarah wasn't pleased to see Radolf Nauta again.......

COVER: "It was his fault that she'd lost her job at the hospital and had been forced to look elsewhere for work. She hadn't expected to meet him in this new environment. Radolf was just the sort of man Sarah disliked most--arrogant, opinionated and entirely too sure of himself. And yet, each time she saw him, she found herself wondering what he really thought of her. Which was stupid because he was the last man on earth she could ever love."
Sarah works for Professor Nauta in a hospital in London, but, at his request, uses her vacation time to look after his granny in Holland, who is old and dying. Unfortunately, staying for the funeral causes her to be late in returning to work, and her supervisor insists she never received the letter of explanation that Sarah sent to her. So she is fired, without Radolf's knowledge. Later, Sarah finds work as a maid in the home of Lady Wesley, who, unknown to Sarah, happens to be godmother to Radolf. At lot of this story entails Radolf's search for Sarah in his efforts to right a wrong. Along the way, he falls in love with Sarah, and she with him, but neither is willing to admit it. Matched antagonists to the end, they finally do discover each other and a love for a lifetime. A typical Betty Neels romance, I found this one a bit "spicier" than most in that the dialog between the characters was "peppery" at times, but always sweet. If you are an animal lover, (and I am!) Betty's descriptions of the animals in this book, Charles the cat and Trotter the dog, are delightful! Five stars for this one!

Jilted, angry Doctor falls hard...

He had his work and a well ordered life, but his mother is intrigued by a girl that was sitting right under his nose. The girl is plain, but kind and sensible and doesn't need rescuing - she supports herself just fine. That is until the doctor and his mother get involved. Gradually the doctor finds he can't shake this girl, from his thoughts, from his life, from his dreams. When he isn't finding ways to see her, fate finds ways to have them meet. This is a lovely, romantic story and I think one of Betty's very best. Highly recommended to any Betty Neels fan!

For That Particular Timeframe It Was Good

For those of you looking for anything more than a peck for a kiss this book is not for you. The story was a good one and the characters were strong. I was getting confused with some of the old time words, UK references and dutch remarks but I hung in there and read it in one sitting. I downloaded this for free so I wasn't disapointed but honestly I wouldn't have wanted to spend much on it I like more upbeat modern or historical this was neither. I found that the authors background was interesting which drew me to her books. I'll look for some more free ones. Enjoy

Aviation weather finally presented in pleasant format.

As a student private pilot it's easy to get too much dull information in front of you that must be sifted through to find practical pearls. Aviation Weather by Peter Lester comes closest of the many sources for weather information out there that gives relevant and beautifully formatted information in a succinct presentation. It's hard to make METAR and TAF abbreviations readable to a new student, but this Jeppesen book trys to at least tie them in with all the other weather information available, and show many different sources available to pilots for their preflight briefing.

Practical???

This book was full of theory. Theory is important up to a point . I got all of the information contained in this book in a cheaper book Aviation Weather and Weather Services (Gleim)

Practical weather was contained to small paragraphs in the last chapter of the book. As an instrument pilot I found the very little information on the actual flying aspect. Classroom oriented, certainly not cockpit oriented.

It covers the basic theories well, Lapse rates, TS, cyclones, etc.

An exceptional story, but ignore the synopsis; it's nothing like the writing in the book

The Girl with All the Gifts might be my favorite book of 2014 (so far). It’s certainly in my top 5. Before I discuss the book, I have to discuss the synopsis. I feel like I’ve been complaining about synopses a lot recently, usually because they don’t reflect the tone of the book. This is probably the most egregious example. The synopsis is written as though a very young child with a very limited vocabulary is speaking. You would rightfully assume that the book would be written in this same manner, but you would be wrong. WHY do marketers do this? Are they intentionally trying to turn off readers? I heard about this book from somewhere other than Goodreads, and I’m sure I would never had chosen to read it if he synopsis was all I had to go on. The main character is a 10 year old girl named Melanie, and I could understand the desire to write the synopsis in a young voice IF the MC had that same voice in a first person narrative. But that is not the case here. Melanie is a very intelligent girl, and the narrative is written with an intelligent tone in the third person and doesn’t reflect her voice at all.

Sorry to go on and on about this, but I don’t want the odd choice for the synopsis to discourage anyone from reading the book. Because ALL of you should want to read The Girl with All the Gifts, and I’m going to do my best to tell you why. I’m going to keep it vague, because you need to discover the secrets of the book for yourself.

The story is set in a post-apocalyptic society in the U.K. Melanie and other children attend school classes, which seems normal enough on the surface, but it soon become apparent that something is not quite right, both with the children and with this school. We get hints of the nature of these differences early on, but it takes some time to learn what caused the apocalypse and how Melanie’s world reached this point.

Melanie has what could be called a childhood crush on her favorite teacher, Miss Justineau. Miss Justineau sees something in Melanie that stands out from the other children, and she can’t help responding to Melanie’s adoration, even though she tries to keep an emotional distance. Miss Justineau differs greatly from the other adults in Melanie’s life who treat her with apathy, at best, and shocking cruelty, at worst. It’s not hard to see why Melanie feels such affection for her teacher. The scenes between Melanie and Miss Justineau are heat-breaking. Melanie craves physical and emotional affection, just like every child deserves. But Miss Justineau can only do so much without risking her life and Melanie’s.

The Girl with All the Gifts starts out so strongly, and I thought that there was no way the story could maintain this pace. I was wrong, because the latter part of the book was even better. Melanie makes a decision at the end that has enormous implications. It affected me so much that it took a little while before I could even pick up another book. But was it the right decision? I think so, but that doesn’t mean that I was emotionally prepared for it.

If you choose to buy this book (and you should!). think twice about buying from Amazon. Aside from the obvious reasons, Amazon is selling this at list price. However many words there are for brilliant this is all of them!

Melanie is a very special girl. Dr Caldwell calls her ‘our little genius’. Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don’t like her. She jokes that she won’t bite, but they don’t laugh. Melanie loves school. She loves learning about spelling and sums and the world outside the classroom and the children’s cells. She tells her favourite teacher all the things she’ll do when she grows up. Melanie doesn’t know why this makes Miss Justineau look sad.

So. Mr Carey. I have been waiting for another book in another series, some folks will know what I mean, but I thought hey, this one will do to be going on with. Especially when good blogger friend Kate waxed lyrical about it and told me I must read it. Frankly it wasnt a hard sell..

This is an INCREDIBLY difficult book to review without spoilers – I had no idea why Melanie was so special going in, and I’m not going to tell you either, but special she is. And not just because this is a clever, fascinating, addictive story about – ha see you nearly had me – its about THINGS OCCURRING - but because she is ridiculously easy to love, so well written is she. In fact all of the characters pop right off the page for one reason or another.You will either want to protect them with your life or shoot them in the head. Often with no inbetween.

Its a horror story. But not really. Its a fantasy. But then, no not really. There is certainly love there. And loss. And some stand out scene setting. And a heck of a lot of jaw dropping moments. And don’t start reading it just before bed time. You won’t sleep. For various reasons…not all of which will have to do with how eager you are to find out what happens.

When I read a book like this it reminds me why I love to read. Utterly compelling, taking you away from the madness of the real world and into the madness of another…offering a new twist on a popular theme and getting you right at the heart. RIGHT at the heart. Its only the end of January but I would be MOST surprised if this one doesnt end up in my top 5 of the year. And trust me, choosing last years top 5 was hard enough..

PLEASE be careful which reviews you read of this one before you dive in my reading friends. It really is best arrived at with a beautiful blissful ignorance.

Wasn't that fun? In a gory sort of way

I read the first few pages of M. R. Carey's "The Girl with All the Gifts" and the book yanked in, kicking and screaming. I just could not figure out what was going on, and I had to find out. Boy, was I shocked when it all became clear. So, if you want that same ah-ha moment, stop reading reviews, and go get a copy. Go ahead. I'll wait.

Done? Wasn't that fun? In a gory sort of way.

Now, I'll tell you what I really think. Normally I try to keep zombies and their novels more than an arm's length away. Too much blood and guts. Worse, too poorly written. So I was shocked several chapters into this well written book, when I discovered a zombie, or a thousand.

The story chronicles the life and times of test subject #1, a super smart little girl named Melanie. She has a penchant for statistics, Greek mythology and nature. She really loves her teachers--well, one of her teachers. Not the one who is planning to dissect her some day.

When the military base that is Melanie's home is destroyed, five people escape. Now, they have to make their way across the British countryside to Beacon, the last walled-off refuge for those who still have a heart beat. Problem: the countryside is crawling with zombies and living scavengers who are just as dangerous. Unfortunately for Melanie, Beacon is not about to let a little zombie, genius or not, into its sanctuary.

The whole scenario leaves you wondering who really deserves the title of "human being?" Melanie is emotionally bonded to her four flawed travel companions, who would normally be her food. Tragically, she is mostly considered dead to the people she loves.

Excellent Book!

Aside from being a great read, this book is very informative and has beautiful illustrations. Also, the content of the book is easy to follow and understand. You will definitely learn alot and become well versed in color terminology.

Avoid Kindle Edition

This is the first LP Kindle edition I've bought, and I won't be doing so again. It is extremely hard to navigate - the table of contents is not intuitive enough or detailed enough. As an example, there is no table of contents where you can see the list of the regions (much less the cities within them) and navigate directly to them. It's also full of formatting problems - blank pages, photos that take up 1/3 of the available space on the page... the worst are the maps. The map of the country is about 1/2 the size of an iPad screen and at a resolution where you cannot zoom in effectively. Other maps throughout the book are presented so small it's impossible to see them or zoomed in but cut into four squares spread out over four pages. Makes no sense. Finally, the formatting - font, heading, section set up - is extremely basic, making it hard to skim and find what you are looking for. Unfortunately, skimming through the pages is the only way because the table of contents navigation is so weak. There aren't even headers at the top of the page to tell you which section you are in! You have to page back until you find a section header. I'm really disappointed.

Buy the PDF version of the book from Lonely Planet and read it on your Kindle or IPad. It won't be perfect, but it will be MUCH easier.

My friend and I decided to roadtrip through Morocco, from Casablanca to Marrakech, to Fes, and to Tangier. We only had a week and wanted to make sure we had the best use of our time, and this book appeared to have the most information about the country. My friend also purchased a book of her own, but we ended up using mine instead, because there was a lot more information. It had some great tips about customs and how to navigate difficult areas (such as the medina and markets). The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because the maps were a bit confusing. I also felt some of it was a bit outdated (one example: the horse/buggy rides are a fairly newer addition to Marrakech, and there was no information in the book at all about these, how to negotiate, what you can expect to pay, are there scams, etc).

Overall, though, I thought it was a great companion guide for the trip we took.

This probably is still one of the best travel guides for Morocco. The maps are excellent, lodging info useful but where it remains unsurpassed is trekking information. Info on how to structure 1-7 day treks, where to eat and sleep and how to find your way across the difficult terrain is excellent, imo better than what I've seen in other LP guides. Less effort seems to have been expended on interesting info on cities & their history; sometimes, as in the case of Marrakesh, the prose borders on corny. I bought the Kindle edition as well and can;t understand why the authors did not add little videos of locales or clips of music.

More could be said about the Morrocan people and about music of which there are many many distinct (incredibly rich and powerful) forms that include Gnawa, the exorcism ritual music of former black slaves (it's the Moroccan "blues").

Moroccans are a diverse, proud and beautiful people. A little kindness and generosity go a long way - too often have i seen tense fat lilly-white Westerners walk around nervously clutching bags strapped on their chests, evading payment of a few MADs for a street performance and then get fleeced while buying a carpet or a lamp, or get screwed by taxi drivers who are in fact scoundrels that are almost impossible to evade. Faced with professional beggars, tourists tend to clam up and willfully ignore real cases of hardship that one sees on city streets or in some Berber villages. No, one should be a human amongst human beings, revel in sights, smells, vibrations and emotions that are Morocco. And when it comes to large purchases, go for the jugular and haggle without mercy. Haggling is an emotional-financial-cleverness extravaganza that Moroccans seem to live for. Don't disappoint them. They'll still get your hide and that's OK too.
