Couldn't Put This Book Down!

"Something New" by Janis Thomas is one of the best books I've read in 2013. And I read a lot! Hilarious, extremely well-written and so relatable, "Something New" captures the feelings, thoughts and desires of a 40 something year old woman on the cusp of major change. Having kids, being a wife and trying to figure out the next stage of our lives is something most moms think about, and I tore through this book dying to see what Ellen would do (and write) next. I absolutely loved this book and would recommend it to anyone looking for a laugh out loud read with an inspiring and authentically flawed main character.

Fantastic Read!

I thought Something New was a fantastic book. It was funny and thoughtful. It read more like non-fiction because it reminded me of how crazy life is for most wives and mothers. Ellen is typical of a mother/wife in personal crisis! As we read about her journey, alot of us can relate to her state of mind. I loved this book and can't wait for her next!!

From an outsider's perspective, Ellen Ivers has the ideal life. But as she's approaching her forty third birthday, she's realizing that her life has become a bit stale. Yes, she has a husband and kids who love her but she craves more. She decides that a personal reinvention is necessary. She starts watching what she eats, exercising more and even doing things she never thought she would. When her cousin convinces her to enter a blog contest, Ellen was hesitant at first, but thought … what the heck? Not knowing what to blog about was stressing her out. But when she starts blogging about what’s going on in her life, it becomes therapeutic for her. It also doesn’t hurt that no one knows that it’s her behind the penname SomethingNewAt42. So it allows her the freedom of being honest without the concern of being caught!

When a hot piece of meat moves into the area, aka Ben Campbell, the local moms go into sexual over-drive! But to Ellen’s surprise, it’s her that Ben has his sights on. No matter that they are both married, Ellen can’t deny that having this hot, new guy giving her attention does wonders for her ego and self-esteem. But when their friendship starts to grow beyond friends, Ellen starts to wonder if the grass really is greener on the other side. Is she willing to throw away the family she loves and the comforts of home for this stranger who is suddenly giving her the attention that she so craves?

I can’t even begin to express how much I loved this book! As a woman who is about to turn the big 4-0 this year, I can relate to Ellen’s need to spice up her life a bit and also make some personal changes. I felt that the book was well written, relatable and the humor was one point! I love, love, loved this book and recommend it to any woman who has ever wished that her life could be a bit different. Another amazing book by Janis Thomas.

Very important book for educators

This book is an excellent introduction and manual for Brain Gym. It not only explains in detail how to do the simple excercises, but gives many scientific explanations for how and why they work.

For those who don't know, Brain Gym is a method whereby brain functions are accessed by performing simple physical movements, and it has been found to profoundly improve ADD/ADHD/Dyslexic conditions as well as other learning disabilities. It is a series of exercises (drawn from all areas of movement -- from the calisthenics we did in phys-ed class to the eye exercises of behavioral optometrists, to acu-pressure points) specifically studied and narrowed down after many years of research to those that were found to optimally affect brain functions. Luckily they are all easy and take only minutes (or even seconds) to do, and they get immediate, verifiable results. In my experience they help students and professionals of all ages learn faster, improve memory and coordination, and generally reduce the stress of adjusting to new situations or learning foreign or difficult tasks.
In my own experience, I no longer teach violin without integrating Brain Gym exercises because the students learn so much faster and develop better technique because they are more relaxed, naturally. I have also taught Brain Gym to writers, musicians, actors, doctors, mathematicians, teachers, dancers, investment bankers, producers etc. and the feedback is consistently positive. If you are a teacher and are interested in this kind of thing, classes are recommended, but the next best thing is to have this little book!

About the Author
Timothy C. Fabrizio has been researching and writing about the talking machine for almost 30 years. His articles have appeared in numerous publications and he has addressed many scholarly groups on subjects ranging from early motion picture sound synchronization to interpretation of original documents. He has done consulting work at the Library of Congress and other archives and museums. The first book he co-authored with George F. Paul, The Talking Machine, an Illustrated Compendium 1877-1929, published in 1997 by Schiffer, has met with public success and critical acclaim. Having begun as an actor and enjoyed a career as a bookseller, Mr. Fabrizio is presently a talking machine restorer and dealer in New York State. George F. Paul began collecting and researching the talking machine in 1967 at the age of thirteen. Nearly 40 of his articles on talking machine history have appeared in various publications, addressing subjects such as the origins of the spring-driven Gramophone, American Zonophone Records, and Columbia's entry in to the disc market. He has conducted the "Phonograph Forum" column in the New Amberola Graphic since 1983. The first book he co-authored with Timothy C. Fabrizio, The Talking Machine, an Illustrated Compendium 1877-1929, received an Association for Recorded Sound Collections 1998 Award for Excellence. About the Author

Joan Littlefield Cook is a Professor of Psychology and current chairperson of the Psychology Department at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. As an undergraduate she majored in Psychology at Tennessee Technological University. She earned a Master’s and Ph.D. in Psychology and Human Development at Vanderbilt University. Joan has taught courses for more than 20 years related to child and adolescent development, educational psychology, and cognitive psychology. Students have always appreciated her knowledge of the field and her ability to present information in a way that is useful, motivating, and friendly. The Student Association at the University of Wisconsin-Madison voted her as one of their most outstanding professors, and the UW-Whitewater Psychology Student Organization presented her with their Excellence in Teaching Award. Joan's research is on mathematical problem solving and cognitive development, and she is currently involved in projects to support and assess critical thinking in college students.

 

Greg Cook is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Greg majored in Psychology at the University of Dayton and later received his Ph.D. in Psychology at Vanderbilt University. Greg has worked in higher education for more than 25 years. He’s taught courses in child development, research methods, statistics, and related topics at Whitewater as well as at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Vanderbilt University. At Whitewater Greg received a department award and also a College of Letters and Sciences award for excellence in teaching. Students consistently comment on his ability to present difficult information in a clear and understandable way. Greg’s research on cognitive development has been published in scholarly journals such as Child Development, Developmental Psychology, and the Journal of Experimental Child Psychology. He also collaborated with colleagues in the College of Education on studies published in the Journal of Experimental Education, the Journal of Research & Development in Education, and the Journal of Reading Education. Currently, Greg is the Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at UW-Whitewater.

The book is in great condition and arrived quickly. The price was relatively good, but as most recent edition textbooks are pricey, it could have been better. All in all, it was a good deal!

Not HG101's Best Showing

I have purchased all of HG101's books, read them and enjoyed them, even the massive Classic Graphic Adventures book. The level of detail is very nice every time.

That's kind of the problem with the 200 Best Games book. It isn't there. From my reading, I suspect it's because the HG101 team tried to cram in 400 games into the book (200 regular, 200 see alsos) and because of that, lost a lot of room to really dive in. The book suffers from that lack of detail.

My other issue with the book are the game choices. While I understand lists like this are completely subjective, there are a great many games that would not make the vast majority of Best Of lists. Barkley Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden? Crash Bandicoot 3? Blood? Best of ALL TIME? These are somehow better than Tetris, which is not mentioned even in the runner ups? Don't get me wrong - there is not a bad game on the list, but the case to why some of these have been included is shaky at best. Also, a lot of choices seem picked just to be contrarian to the norm - Majora's Mask over Ocarina of Time? Really? Super Mario Galaxy 2's reasoning over the first Galaxy was "It has Yoshi". I come to expect better analysis than that from HG101.

I'll continue to purchase HG101's books in the future, definitely, however any offerings like this one (more subjective than objective), I will probably steer clear of.

Good book, print version is so-so.

It's nice to be able to open this book and browse through classic game favorites. It was not quite what I had expected -- check the dimensions before purchasing. It is smaller than I expected for the price, and printed on lower quality stock, though the printing itself is colorful.

About the Author

Claudio Ponticelli graduated in Medicine at the University of Milan in 1961 before specialising in Endocrinology, Urology, and Nephrology. He worked as an assistant nephrologist at the University of Milan, before
becoming Vice-Director of the Unit of Nephrology at Ospedale Maggiore, Milan in 1968, after which he became director first of the Unit of Nephrology, then of the Division of Nephrology in 1974 and finally director of the Department of Nephro-Urology in 2001. He retired in October 2003 and now works as a consultant at Scientific Institute Auxologico in Milan. His main fields of interest are primary and secondary glomerular diseases, renal transplantation, and immunosuppressive therapy. He has written more than 600 articles, and edited 22 books, as well as contributing over 80 chapters for international books.
Richard J. Glassock is an internationally recognized expert in the field of Glomerular Diseases and Clinical Nephrology. He has published over 400 original papers, books, monographs, book chapters and reviews in nephrology. He is the past-President of the American Society of Nephrology and the National Kidney Foundation. He is also past-Chairman of the American Board of Internal Medicine. In 1999 he was elected to Mastership in the American College of Physicians. He is also a member of the American Association of Physicians. He is the former Chair of the Department of Medicine and the University of Kentucky and Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. From 1967 to 1992 he was the Chief of Nephrology at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. He was continuously funded by the NIH for extra-mural research grants from 1967 to 1987. He has lectured in over 90 countries throughout the world and has been a visiting professor at over 120 distinguished academic institutions throughout the world.

Great Review!

I bought this book to review recent information on glomerular diseases. The authors are all "heavyweights" in research, diagnosis and treatment of these disorders. All of the major primary glomerular diseases are covered. It seems quite up to date including some of the newer molecular biology and genetic information. It is not a "cookbook" on treatment but it is well referenced for that information. I am finding it a very informative and actually enjoyable read.

Best book on glomerulonephritis

This book is by far the most complete in the field of glomerulonephritis. Written by two heavyweights, it is not only a guideline for treatment. It deals with all aspects of nephritis, and even with some aspects of secondary nephritis and includes the opinion of the authors in certain topics.
The previous edition is from more than ten years ago and we hope that the next edition will come sooner, since information in this field is changing in a very fast pace.

Excelente libro, no te arrepentirás de comprarlo

¡Saludos desde México!. Este es un libro realmente excepcional. Preciso, conciso. Tiene capìtulos sobre los fármacos inmunosupresores que te servirán de referencia rápida. Todas las glomerulopatías primarias con todos sus esquemas de tratamiento. Es un libro obligado para nefrología (sobre todo si no quieres estrellarte directamente contra el libro excelente -aunque lleno de paja y complicado- Brenner.
Otros libros que meparecen indispensable son el Brenner (que ya mencionè), el Danovitch, de este mismo autor complicaciones del trasplante renal, el Silva de patología y el tratado de diálisis de Montenegro y Correa-Rotter. ¡Suerte a todos!.
