My Testomony

I got saved back in 2004 because of this little book called Power For Living. I saw this book advertised on T.V. and decided to order it. Being a divorced, single mom I suffered from a feeling of hopelessness and dispair even though I tried to hide it from others. Years earlier, while still married, I was diagnosed with what the Doctor's called 'chronic depression.' They told me I was incurable and would have to live with it for the rest of my life. It was so severe for a while that I could barely get out of bed and take care of myself or my family. I was sent to see a therapist which continued for 4 years. She was a feminist who eventually convinced me that if I got a divorce it would solve everything, since my unhappy marriage must have been to blame for my problams. So I took her advise, which I later would regret. What I discovered is that divorce caused a whole new set of problams like poverty, and trying to be a mom and a dad both at the same time. But mostly it had devestating affects on my children. The hurt and pain the divorce caused was more damage than I ever could have imagined. I felt like such a failure. I had trouble diciplining my kids. I was at work all the time and couldn't be home with them, they were failing in school and getting involved with the wrong kind of friends, even getting in trouble with the law. Then I lost my job and my apartment and had to put all my things in storage. I moved in with my boyfriend, which he only allowed because of my situation, but the whole time I was staying at his house it was obvious that he didn't really want us there, thus causing our relarionship to fall apart. One day I came to this realization that I was homesick and that I wanted more than anything to go home but I didn't know where home was. That's when God gave me this revelation that heaven was home. I started to weep, I thought God gave up on me, that He wouldn't want anything to do with me, but this experiance started to give me hope. I started listening to the christian radio programs. then one day I ran across that little blue book called 'Power For Living' in a box in my boyfriends garage. It's funny how that book was just laying in top of this box along with a bible I recieved from a friend years earlier. I had some cooking things in that box that I thought I might need at my boyfriends house but I didn't remember putting those books in there. I had ordered that book like a year earlier but never finished reading it. Now here it was. I read the book and said the prayer at the end of the book, asking God to forgive me of my sins and inviting Him to come into my heart and be my Savior. I remember a prayer in there that asked the Holy Spirit to give me understanding of Gods word as I read the bible. As soon as I started reading that bible the Lord filled me with His Spieit. I never felt such joy, such peace. That night as I lay in bed I actually heard the Lord speak to me and say "your name is written in the Lambs book of life"I have bacome a new creature in Christ, just as the word says. Now I understand what Jesus meant when He said "you must be born again". If you are searching for hope,peace, joy like I was then get this liittle book, or just pray right now and repent fo all your sins and ask God to come into your heart and save you, trusting Him alone to be your "personal" Lord and Savior. Then you will know Him, not just know things about Him. Thats the difference between being born again or just having head knowledge about who Jesus is. He is real,He is alive,and He will not turn anyone away no matter what they've done. He is no respector of persons. Why don't you call on Him today!

Finding Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior Gives Power for Living

Knowing Jesus Christ can be as simple as receiving Him personally as your Lord and Savior. Without Him there is no power for Living, not only the Christian life, but the overcoming life in a lost confused world of a fallen creation.

This book explains simply the direction a person seeking the truth can follow. Along with this simple direction are examples of historical people who share their support for the power that will come when truly believing in Jesus Christ as the only path to an eternal life of value. A life with the Son of God. He said, "I go to prepare a place for you..."

That you can be there with Jesus Christ makes this book a valued source to verify a testimony of evidence both Biblical and personal from historical witnesses and scriptural truths related in simple format for a new believer or seeker of truth.

This book is a fine incursion into one's belief systems, without the sophistication that too often deter from reading. Easy to read, and not too long either. Get it, it is well worth the price!

A great resource for the SAS programmer in the healthcare industry!

New to the SAS Business Intelligence platform? This is the book for you. Renu clearly steps the reader through the many BI tools available to the SAS programmer. Best of all, she clearly uses examples from the payer-side of the healthcare industry. This approach makes the information immediately useful to the healthcare programmer/analyst. Learning a new tool in the context of familiar data is an often overlooked feature of educating the business analyst. Clear and readable graphics and screenshots allows the reader a quicker understanding of the presented material. Wish I had this book years ago!

Sacks, a neurologist and author of the popular The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat ( LJ 2/15/86), developed a serious interest in sign language and deafness after reviewing Harlan Lane's When the Mind Hears ( LJ 10/15/84 ) for the New York Review of Books . In this work, Sacks explores all facets of the deaf world--he meets with deaf people and their families and visits schools for the deaf, spending a good deal of time at Gallaudet University. As he writes, "I had now to see them in a new, 'ethnic light,' as people with a distinctive language, sensibility, and culture of their own." The work is divided into three broad sections, throughout which there are numerous, somewhat distracting footnote "excursions." Although there is a wealth of insight and information here, the book tends to drag for the average reader and may disappoint fans of Sacks's previous best seller. Recommended for scholars and graduate collections.

Although I agree with some other reviewers that the footnotes are tedious to read (my edition has them at the back ...

I'm seeing this book constantly compared to Sacks' "Hat" even though this work is in a completely different style. First of all, this is only on people who are deaf and their culture, while the title of Hat has "and other Clinical Tales" at the end. This book is in a similar style to Musicophilia and Awakenings, it takes on one subject and explores it in depth. So, while you don't get the varied clinical stories, you get a deep view on people who are deaf.
Although I agree with some other reviewers that the footnotes are tedious to read (my edition has them at the back of the book so there was a lot of flipping), it is, as always, an easily readable and informative text on the subject. I love how Sacks, through this and all his books, focuses on how people adapt to their "disabilities" even though they are seen as less than normal in our culture at large and makes you realize that they are not disabled, but differently abled, capable of everything "normal" people are.

Seeing what makes us human.

Looking at language without speech is mind blowing. Without language we do not share in human culture. We do not "think" without language. I truly believe that everyone should find the experiences of the deaf important and interesting on an emotional and intellectual level. This book was a great start for me.
While this book is dated, Oliver Sacks shares very valuable experiences by deaf people. He reviews some of the personal struggles of the deaf, their historic treatment by hearing people, some history of sign language, and the development of Deaf culture. It is helpful that Oliver Sacks starts initially from his own ignorance. He walks us through well researched insights, and he brilliantly lights our understanding of human thinking that comes from language development.

A door to the world of the Deaf

As a hearing person, I must admit that I never gave much thought at all to the Deaf, let alone Deaf culture. Sacks' Seeing Voices is a real eye opener in this regard. Sacks admits that he came at the problem of deafness from a medical/neurological perspective, and was quickly and radically changed by what he learned about the Deaf. Sacks passion is evident as he takes the reader through the history of Deaf culture, the struggles and successes of the Deaf. I now have a new appreciation of the Deaf, and their place in society, and their unique difficulties. This has opened a new channel in my mind, one which I intend to explore more fully in the future.

This is a great book for anyone looking for a biblical perspective on intimacy, and has questions about the different aspects of marital intimacy. While this book is more marketed towards women, I love reading this with my husband, and I think it helps a lot with tackling any tough situations as they arise in your sex life. I would recommend for any married couple. :)

Devotions that change your viewpoint to God's

I really like how J.Parker intertwined God's word with simple steps to change and a prayer. She pinpoints some of the most important and sometimes difficult areas and thoughts we deal with in marriage and gives God's perspective. I am reading each devotion daily for one week and going on to the next one on Sunday morning. That way I can really soak up the messages.

Son's math score went up EIGHT points

My son originally scored a 16 in Math on his first ACT. We tried two other ACT prep books before this one. They were long and tedious and mainly just reviewed math skills. This book went well beyond the skills needed and explained how to attack a variety of problems that are common on the ACT. Each of the 50 skills are broken down into a one page explaination and an additional page of five practice problems. There are study cards for each skill so you can review the skill daily to help remember it. Sam was able to cover two to five skills daily without feeling overwhelmed or defeated. His score increased to a 24. In each of the subscore areas, he increase by 4 points for an overall increase of eight points. I strongly recommend this book. It was completedly different than other books we tried and apparently it's fairly effective. He might have done better had he finished the last ten skills. He only finished the first 40 skills in the book.

Quick review of what's on the ACT Math.

If you just want a quick review book than this is the book for you. This book is short,concise, with all topics reviewed. All answers are clearly explained. The first review gave a very accurate description of how the book was organized, so I will not repeat. The book itself is well organized.
However, if are looking a more intensive math practice,a better book would be McGraw-Hill's CONQUERING THE ACT MATH.

The Best Prep For The Math Portion Of The ACT

I have not been in school since 2006 and I just took my ACT last weekend. After signing up for the ACT, I spent hours online trying to pick out the book that would help me prepare. I am very strong with English and Reading, but a little more than rusty on my Math skills. I decided to purchase a book that would mainly focus on the Math section. This book was my decision. The only book I purchased for ACT prep. At first I was unsure if I had made the right choice in the one book that would help me get ready for this big test. When I sat down and started taking the pretest, I realized I was in deeper than I thought. But when the lessons started--I mean the "skills", I started to understand the equations and it made the Math seem a lot simpler. Each lesson has 5 questions; ranging from easy to hard, that help you review each skill. After you are through with all the skills, there is a review and a posttest. There is also a CD-ROM attached that has 2 additional practice test. I completed the book and both practice tests. The night before the test, I didn't need to cram. The Math test was second, after English. I was so confident with my Math and with the help of a good calculator (TI-30XIIS), I even had time to go back and check my work! This book really helped me prepare for everything that was included on the test. I was so happy with the results and how much I learned!

The new edition includes discussions of key events in American history and TV history since the book’s original publication in 1997, including the Monica Lewinsky scandal and Clinton impeachment; the massacre at Columbine High School; the 2000 presidential election; and the television coverage of September 11, 2001. In addition, the book considers the cultural impact of recent prime-time programs such as Seinfeld, CSI, and Will & Grace.

As with the successful first edition, Defining Visions: Television and the American Experience in the 20th Century is thematically organized and presents a sweeping account of the connections between the medium and American culture. It tells the story of how television not only covered history in the 20th century but also actively influenced its course.

About the Author
Mary Ann Watson is Professor of Electronic Media and Film Studies at Eastern Michigan University. She is author of The Expanding Vista: American Television in the Kennedy Years (1994) and has been a consultant to several museum exhibitions and documentary films. Watson serves on the editorial board of Television Quarterly and is a frequent contributor to its pages.

Very informed and thought-provoking book

This was a very thought-provoking book. The author does an effective job of showing the powerful impact television has had since its inception until the late 1990's. The book is a little dated, but it is a rich resource as it covers many influential shows throughout history.

Watson reveals how televison has shaped public opinion in its portrayal of minorities, women, and people with disabilities. It was very interesting to me to note that there have always been special interest groups that have had a powerful impact on influencing how certain groups of people are portrayed on television shows. Womens groups have spent a lot of time and effort to lobby television producers to remove sexist materials from production. Certain professions, like medical practitioners, have had a lot of input on how the profession is represented.

Watson's ideology is apparent in this book. She favors attempts to censor television shows that are vulgar or demeaning to groups of people. She is very critical of the level of violence and sexual exploitation present in shows. She had positive things to say about Newton Minow, a censor of the Kennedy years. She blames a lot of the present trends in television on Reagan-era deregulation. This viewpoint may not appeal to some readers.

I liked the book, because it revealed the major controversies in television history, such as Dan Quayle's controversial comments about "Murphy Brown." She wrote about the changes in viewpoints over the years, such as disabled groups turning against Jerry Lewis by pointing out that the annual telethons were considered paternalistic and insulting to many Americans with disabilities.

I certainly did not agree with all of Watson's conclusions. For example, she is critical of the "Cosby Show." Rather than praise a stable and successful African-American family, she takes issue with the show for not putting enough emphasis on the fact that the minority group has not "arrived" and several reforms need to be taken to ensure that the demographic reaches full equality.

This is an excellent book and very informative. The author did her research and made lots of good points. Not everyone will agree with all of her conclusions. One weakness of the book is that she feels that television has had a strong impact on the culture, but she doesn't place much emphasis on the view that television may also reflect the changing values of society.

Useless and boring relic from the Professional Scold school of academic criticism

Television has gone through a renaissance lately. There are more quality shows with interesting plots and fascinating characters than ever before. From HBO shows to comedies to historical shows on AMC there are dozens of amazing shows that prove television's potential as a medium capable of greatness. Of course, like the Globe Theater in the time of Shakespeare, the taint of past transgressions hangs heavy. Few of Shakespeare's contemporaries could see him as a genius because his plays were considered common fare for the commoners. For hundreds of years, his plays were condemned as being too violent, too silly, too chaotic to be quality. It took the Romantics to revive Shakespeare.

Mary Ann Watson is the same kind of professional scold that would have condemned theater 500 years ago for much of the same reasons. She would have ignored everything about Hamlet except for the bloody ending. Christopher Marlowe would have had some praise for his sympathetic portrayal of Edward II but the violent ending would have been a reinforcement of homophobia.

Throughout this dull little trifle, Watson can't stop herself from adding her personal bias into the mix. Frequently she talks about television reaching a "new low" and "leaving its morality at the door" and the like. She condemns 80s and 90s comedies for depicting sex without consequences especially in the era of AIDS (ignoring the fact that AIDS never really affected the kind of heterosexual characters in these shows), traditional families and violence. Seinfeld gets a couple of pages in contrast to "positive" religious and spiritual shows like the saccharine Highway to Heaven and the so-bland-it's-excrutiating Touched by an Angel. The Simpsons is condemned as a show where a traditional family is depicted without comment (forget about the popular culture jokes throughout) and Friends is simply a lot of oversexed too young people who drink a lot. And Twin Peaks is the aforementioned "new moral low" because forget about the non-traditional story telling or the purposeful attack on conventions or the dancing midget dream sequences; the only thing Watson cares about is the violence.

And to make matters worse, she can't stop repeating the same lie about those "numerous studies" concerning the "casual relationship between television violence and real life violence" and as usual, she uses the same tired anecdotes about the murderers who really liked Kojack. If this was an anti-porn book, she'd bring up Ted Bundy's final speech blaming pornography for his serial killer career.

In other words, this is a terrible little book that academics love because it seems profound when it's just another condemnation of popular culture. The reason why critics like Chuck Klosterman and Nathan Rabin (and the AV Club) are so popular is because they approach television not as a mindless entertainment or a condemnation worthy straw man to beat on, but as an artistic medium that should be approached with the academic rigor as books or plays.

A textbook I will keep

I usually sell textbooks back at the end of each semester however, I really enjoyed this book. I may order another copy for a friend who is writing a cirriculum for his HS students.
